At first, the region lay under water, but about 6-7.000 years ago, there was sufficient land for people to settle first on the islands which later became Södertörn. There were stone age villages already about 6.000 years ago and later, during the bronzeage, about 3.000 years ago people slowly settled to agriculture and stock raising. Village remains, ceramics even from the continent, bronze workshops and rock carvings bear evidence of this period During the iron age the population increased rapidly and the fertile grounds laid dry by the continuing land-elevation were cultivated. Most of todays manors of Botkyrka were founded as early as this period. The stone church from 1176 (1129) and rune-stones bear evidence of the conversion of the vikings to Christianity. Botkyrka church is named after the local son Botvid, Christian martyr and Saint.
